Horsetail Conditioning Nail Ointment

Due to its high silica content, any horsetail preparation is ideal for strengthening nails.  When combined with apricot kernel oil it is extremely hydrating for the skin around the nails and this is often found in cuticle care products.  You can buy the horsetail tincture ready-made or create your own from fresh or dried leaves (see my section on how to make a tincture recipe).

What you will need:

15g / ½ oz beeswax

3 tsp (15 ml) sunflower oil

70 ml (2.5 ml) apricot kernel oil

20 drops of tincture

small pan

small pot, approximately 100 ml size

What to do:

Melt the beeswax and sunflower oil in a small pan very slowly on a very low heat, this process should take less than a minute.

Remove from the heat and add the apricot kernel oil.

Add the horsetail tincture and stir into the mixture well, the beeswax will help the oil to absorb the alcohol from the tincture.

Pour the ointment into a small pot then rub it into your nails and cuticles nightly.

NB: There are many poisonous plants that look similar to horsetail so it may be best to buy the tincture unless you are completely sure that you have identified the correct plant.
