Natural tooth powder is made of 100% natural organic ingredients with no synthetic additives such as preservatives, foaming agents, colours, artificial flavours, baking soda, fluoride, silicone etc. It is very effective for receding or infected gums and a preventive for recurring cavities.

This is a natural solution to promote healthy teeth and gums without any of the toxic ingredients normally used in toothpaste. It is uniquely formulated to clean and safely polish teeth, improve gum health and freshen breath

Recipe one

What you will need

  • ½ tsp Bentonite clay – can be interchanged with white kaolin clay or activated charcoal
  • ½ tsp baking powder – can be left out if you feel it is too abrasive
  • ½ tsp Himalayan salt – can be interchanged with any high quality salt
  • ½ tsp coconut sugar/Stevia or natural sweetener (optional)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 crushed magnesium tablet – not essential
  • 1 crushed calcium tablet – can be interchanged with crushed egg shells for higher mineral content
  • 2 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 2 drops mint essential oil

What to do

Simply mix all the ingredients together and blend in a spice grinder, then store in a container.  When ready to use, wet your toothbrush and dip into the powder then begin brushing.

Tooth powder, the typical type of ingredients and their uses/properties:

Bentonite Clay: absorbs toxins, impurities, heavy metals and other internal contaminants. It has a high mineral content with the ability to mineralize the teeth and heal decay.

Activated Charcoal: pulls and removes stains from teeth and acts as a detoxing agent.

White Kaolin Clay: is high in calcium, silica, zinc and magnesium and helps to whiten and polish teeth. Even those with very sensitive teeth can use this twice a day without sensitivity issues.

Himalayan salt or sea salt, Himalayan Pink Salt: is an excellent product for dental hygiene. Most common tooth problems derive from an over acidic condition in the mouth and throat. This salt will build up a pH neutral mouth flora and will help protect your tooth enamel.

Coconut sugar or Stevia or XYLITOL: any one of these is for the flavour of the powder, my favourite is the coconut powder as it does not have an artificial taste to it like the sweeteners (yes even the natural ones).

Cinnamon powder: for flavour and it is also antibacterial so tastes great and helps discourage bacterial growth in the mouth.

Baking powder: This cleans and whitens your teeth. However some feel that it is abrasive.

Peppermint oil or orange essential oil for the flavour: my son who is only 8 enjoys making his own orange tooth powder.

Calcium and magnesium tablets: ground together, these are excellent mineralising ingredients, essential to any tooth powder.  Calcium powder provides extra calcium and magnesium provides minerals and whitens.

Egg shells: ground, they are full of re-mineralising properties

Tea tree oil: to combat bacteria

Mint essential oil: added to support the feeling of fresh breath and flavouring

You can add any of the following:

Dried sage: Sage is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, it fights gum infection and cleanses the mouth of bacteria extremely well. It is also a great natural teeth whitener so it pairs nicely with the whitening power of turmeric and activated charcoal that is already in the powder.
Dried cloves: Cloves are naturally antibacterial and give a great taste.

Dried Mint: Fresh mint tastes great and is soothing to the gums.

Colloidal silver: is an excellent way to combat bacteria and create a healthy mouth.

Myrrh: is known to eliminate bad breath and is both antiseptic and soothing for sensitive teeth and gums

Ginger: is an extremely effective solution in the fight against the pain of toothache.

Turmeric: a study in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology showed that turmeric could be as, if not more, effective as a traditional mouthwash in the treatment of gingivitis.

Frankincense: is perfect for dental hygiene as it is antiseptic, disinfectant and can heal gums and prevent premature loss of teeth!

Peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils: are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and naturally freshen breath.
